Fighting for freedom and standing up in face of tyranny — nothing symbolizes that more than America’s first official flag, and the Revolutionary war icon and entrepreneur who is attributed to making it, Betsy Ross. Betsy Ross has secured her place as a founding patriot, alongside other founding fathers, generals, and presidents.
In 1776, legend has it that George Washington and members of a secret Continental Congress committee personally visited Betsy Ross requesting that she create our nation’s first flag. The 13 stars in a circle signified equality, and Ross added to the design, suggesting changing the stars from six points to the iconic five we know. Betsy Ross set the standard for our American Flag and for honoring liberty.
The obverse depicts the original American Flag, encircled by a George Washington quote about it: “Let The Thirteen Stars In A Circle Stand As A New Constellation In The Heavens.” The reverse carries a quote from Betsy Ross “Our Hearts Aching, Our Prayers Praying, Our Flags Waving, Never Forget.” The date 1776. All surrounded by the words Life. Liberty. The Pursuit of Happiness. And, of course, Freedom. The commemorative bears the weight of One Troy Ounce and Fineness of .999 Silver.
