This beautiful legal tender one ounce silver coin commemorates the famous Shekel of Tyre. By the time the port city of Tyre was conquered by Alexander III “The Great” the city was famous for producing high quality silver coinage. The reverse depicts an eagle with a palm branch over its shoulder perched on a branch. The inscription is translated to “Tyre the Holy and Inviolable.” The Shekel became the only currency accepted by the Jewish authorities to pay the annual temple tax. It is believed the Shekel of Tyre is the same coin Judas received in payment for betraying Jesus of Nazareth. The obverse bears the effigy of King Charles III. Surrounded by the words St. Helena, King Charles III, the year, silver fineness, weight, and denomination.
