The U.S. Mint has produced special proof versions for collectors since the platinum American Eagle coin series was first released in 1997. Starting in 1998, the proof platinum Eagle coins have carried a special distinction from the bullion versions. A different reverse design has been used each year.
Design of the Proof Platinum American Eagle – Since its debut in 1997, the United States Mint’s American Eagle platinum proof coin has featured Lady Liberty, a symbol of vigilance and resolute faithfulness to duty, on its obverse (front).
The proof platinum coins are available in the one-ounce size only. The bullion platinum coins are available in one-ounce, one-half ounce, one-quarter ounce and one-tenth ounce sizes. American Eagle platinum proof coins have a limited mintage and are minted at the United States Mint at West Point, thus bearing the “W” mint mark.
Proof Platinum American Eagle Coin Minting Information – American Eagle platinum proof coins contain 99.95 percent platinum. The one-ounce coin, with a $100 face value, is 1.287 inches in diameter and weighs 1.0005 troy ounces.
