The American Eagle coin is the official coin of the United States government. The platinum version was added in 1997 and is the sister coin to its gold and silver counterparts. This coin is minted in 99.95% pure platinum with a face value of $100 U.S. dollars.
The U.S. government backs the purity, weight, and metal content of each and every platinum eagle produced by the United States Mint.
John Mercanti, the US Mint chief engraver responsible for the reverse design of the American Silver Eagle coin also designed the obverse image used on the platinum eagle. This contains an image of the Statue of Liberty’s face with the words “Liberty” and “In God We Trust” with the date of mintage.
The obverse contains the image of a bald eagle soaring over the sun, setting in the distance. Engravings on this side include “United States of America” as well as the coin’s weight, metal content, purity, and face value.
The 1 oz platinum eagle coins can be found in brilliant uncirculated condition in full tubes of 20.
Platinum eagles are eligible for IRA purchases.
